Khoai lang rửa sạch, bỏ vỏ, cắt khoanh đem hấp chín. Khi thấy khoai lang bở thì tắt bếp, gắp khoai ra tô. Nghiền mịn khoai, rây qua rây để loại bỏ xơ. Đổ bột năng và bột nếp vào phần khoai lang, trộn đều. Nhào thật kỹ để được khối bột khoai mịn.
Chia bột khoai thành từng phần nhỏ, xoay bột thành hình trụ đều nhau sau đó cắt thành từng viên. Đun 1 nồi nước sôi, thả viên khoai vào. Chuẩn bị sẵn 1 tô nước lọc, khi phần khoai dẻo nổi lên trên mặt nước thì dùng muôi thủng vớt ra, thả vào nước đá cho khoai không dính.
Làm nước đường cho chè bằng cách cho đường nâu, nước, lát gừng vào nồi, bắc lên bếp đun sôi. Khi ăn, bạn múc khoai ra bát, rưới nước đường, cho các loại topping khác như sương sáo, cho đá vào là có thể dùng rồi.
